1. Grime Tunes
not ordered by importance or date or literally anything but vibes and my motivation to do this.
i also have no credentials at all to do this ive been into this music for a year or something but i feel like im sufficiently well informed to explain some of it to friends
i try to refer to the date of production when possible, if artists arent listed in a crew or a set its probably because
they havent appeared anywhere else yet and i dont know them well enough to write much.
backlinks with the arrows are a little fucked due to how i automatically insert them idk
1.1. Tracks
1.1.1. Musical Mob - Pulse X (January 2002)
DJ Mondie - Straight (2004)
<- Killjoy - Let’s Go (2022)
<- Jammer - Feedback (2003)
<- Mystry - Pulse 8 (~2014)
<- Musical Mob - Pulse XYZ (~2003)
link
Produced by Youngstar, this is probably one of the most well-known and most important grime beats to ever
exist and for sure the most iconic 8-bar tune. Heavy bass, 5 minutes of pretty much the same 16-bars,
but people rinse it and the dozens of tracks it inspired (see backlinks). The kick drum/bass sound/whatever is
probably the most iconic bit of it all.
1.1.1.1. Dizzee Rascal - Pulse X Dubplate
link
pure fire, the intro and first couple bars pop up in my head like twice a day
1.1.2. Musical Mob - Pulse XYZ (~2003)
1.1.3. Mystry - Pulse 8 (~2014)
1.1.4. DJ Wonder - What (~2002)
link
Absurd bass heavy weight
1.1.4.1. Dizzee Rascal - Respect Me
1.1.5. Wiley - The Morgue (2003)
link
obviously very much, uh, inspired by DJ Wonder - What (~2002), as far as i know thats related to some relationship
drama related to him and DJ Wonder, at least according to Genius which also states it was banned from rinse.fm due to that.
1.1.6. Ruff Sqwad - Pied Piper
Ruff Sqwad - White Label Classics
link
Great tune, love the blown out square lead and the eskibeat type beeps and boops. Prod. by Rapid.
also this sells for almost triple digit prices, pretty absurd
1.1.7. Ruff Sqwad - Together
Ruff Sqwad - White Label Classics
link
great guitar bit, choppy 2-step drums, thick square basses to complement it all
1.1.8. Ruff Sqwad - Functions on the Low
Ruff Sqwad - White Label Classics
link
very close to just being cheesy with the chords and all that
part of the record Ruff Sqwad - Misty Cold (XTC Remix) (~2003-2004) is on
1.1.9. Ruff Sqwad - Xtra (2004-2005)
Ruff Sqwad - White Label Classics
link
Heavy one especially with these eight note cymbals and the ever present bassline
1.1.10. Ruff Sqwad - Tings in Boots (2002-2003)
Ruff Sqwad - White Label Classics
link
first Ruff Sqwad track as far I know. very raw and kind of carceral, great bassline but not their best
1.1.10.1. Ruff Sqwad - Tings in Boots (vocal ver) (2002-2003)
link
features (according to discogs at least) Rapid, Tinchy Stryder, Slix.
sadly not very good tbh, its also notable how young tinchy sounds despite being at least 16 or 17
1.1.11. Ruff Sqwad - Misty Cold (~2003)
link
alright one but also very well known for some reason
1.1.11.1. Ruff Sqwad - Misty Cold (XTC Remix) (~2003-2004)
Ruff Sqwad - Functions on the Low
link
outstandingly good, especially with that reversed and cut up sound every 2 bars. classic square bass
shines too
also one of the most expensive grime records, see https://www.discogs.com/release/1698948-XTC-Misty-Cold-Remix
1.1.12. Flirta D - Warp Speed (2004)
1.1.13. Flirta D - Shottaz Riddim
Neffa-T - Keep Hush Bristol: Dr. Dubplate’s Birthday Bash (2022)
link
prod. Youngstar.
This was a dubplate until like 2012 when it got released on https://pitchcontrollerrecords.bandcamp.com/album/slk-the-lost-tapes-2.
feels like an early weightless tune given the lack of real drums and all the sfx, absolute banger
though. also has the characteristic youngstar bass, might be the best flirta track, bit more leftfield
than Warp Speed (especially due to flip. riddim. gymnastics).
1.1.14. TODO Coki & Benga - Night
1.1.15. Plastician - Shallow Grave (2004 Edit)
Plastician - Beg to Differ (2007)
<- Oblig with Big Zuu, Manga, Flirta D, Sox, Jafro & More (2024)
Deep and dark tune and definitely a classic. Somewhere on the edge between grime and dubstep like a lot of
the things Plastician made back in the day. Interestingly it wasnt played out all that much around its release, more like a classic in hindsight.
1.1.16. Joker - Juggernaut (released 2024, made years before that idk)
Oblig with Big Zuu, Manga Saint Hilare, Flirta D, Sox, Jafro & More (2024)
https://soundcloud.com/jokerkapsize/juggernaut
More of a dubstep tune but its been used as a beat so it counts. great way for joker to return and amazing
example of his sound.
1.1.17. Danny Weed - Creeper (~2001)
link
Relatively early eskibeat tune, danny weeds first track and an absolute banger. apparently this just kind
of came to life while wiley was teaching him how to produce. great bassline and weird ass atomosphere
just how i like it
1.1.17.1. God’s Gift, Dizzee Rascal, Breeze - Creeper
1.1.17.2. Dizzee Rascal - Creeper Freestyle
1.1.17.3. Wiley & Dizzee Rascal - Creeper Freestyle (2002)
link
part of the Sidewinder Promo Mix
kind of captures the vibe of grime very well in ways i cant properly explain
1.1.18. Jammer - Feedback (2003)
1.1.19. D Double E - Street Fighter Riddim (2010)
1.1.20. D Double E - Fresh n Clean (2019)
link
prod. star one. originated in an ikea ad campaign but it kinda slaps
1.1.21. Flowdan - Big Mic Man (2002)
he sounds younger in this than even older stuff which is kind of interesting
anyways its the first flowdan solo single, still holds up fairly well imo.
lots of bars in there he still uses, like “i am the big flowdan otherwise known as mr. sandman” or the whole “drive uh drive uh transit van” ordeal i think both of these are in Horror Show Style too
1.1.22. Flowdan - Horror Show Style
Flowdan - Disaster Piece (2016)
<- Flowdan - Big Mic Man (2002)
link
prod. Splurgeboys
absolutely fire
1.1.23. Roll Deep - When I’m ’ere
link
prod. Danny Weed feat. Roachee, Wiley, Scratchy, Trim, Manga, Breeze, Flowdan, Jet Lee.
pretty popular roll deep track and just overall fun. mixing kinda sucks but both riddim and overall
vibe make up for it
1.1.24. Rebound X - Rhythm ’n’ Gash (~2007?)
maybe the most well known instrumental from that time. pretty garagey imo and not as bass focused as one
gets used to in grime, holds up absurdly well though.
nobody really knows who rebound x or the singing woman is afaik, the former just released a couple riddims
on grime forums back in the day and kinda stopped due to reasons i forgot about
1.1.24.1. JME, Skepta - Spaceship (2007)
very famous freestyle from some unidentified radio set. i dont think its all that good though honestly
but the vibes are definitely there
1.1.24.2. Tempa T - RBX (2007)
1.1.24.3. Skepta feat. Jammer - I Spy (2007)
pretty great, super catchy hook and some great bars here and there
1.1.24.4. Rhythm ’n’ Gash (Sir Spyro Remix)
link
great remix, catchy and captures the vibe
1.1.24.4.1. P Money feat. Newham Generals - Sounds of the Sir (~2015)
in particular feat. D Double E and Footsie.
might honestly be my fav dub of this their flows just fit the track so well
named after the Sir Spyro producer tag
1.1.24.5. Tempa T + Dizzee Rascal over Rhythm ’n’ Gash
link
tempz screaming over this works way better than dizzees bits at the end lmao
1.1.25. Sticky - Triplets II (2001)
link
more of a ukg tune innit
cute bassline though
1.1.25.1. Dizzee Rascal over Triplets II (2001)
link
from Danny Weed, Dizzee Rascal, God’s Gift, Wiley (sep 18 2001)
not his best but the national dizzee day thing is silly
1.1.26. Wiley - Eskimo (2001-2002)
one of the biggest riddims of all time and the definite Eskibeat tune, and rightfully so,
this fucks in an uncanny way i really like and has one of these super catchy basslines
1.1.26.1. Wiley - Eskimo 2 (Devil’s Mix) (2002)
link
1ups the uncannyness by removing the drums and adding these twin peaks ass reversed voice samples.
in some sense the first Weightless tune? not sure but it might be.
i prefer that over the mix with drums somehow idk it hits way harder
he stopped calling them devils mixes at some point because of it causing bad luck or something its a little bizarre, interesting interview at https://www.fabriclondon.com/posts/hyperdub-archive-eski-beat-an-interview-with-wiley-part-1-october-2003
1.1.26.3. Wiley - Eskimo 3 (2002)
link
another great version, samples So Solid Crew - Dilemma probably as a jab at them or something
1.1.27. Wiley - Igloo (2003)
first one released on xl i think? another classic though the transitions sound a little random
without any mcs on it
1.1.27.1. Wiley - Wot Do U Call It (2004)
absolute fire track about the identity issues grime had at the time as well as the fallout with the
garage scene, see https://www.fabriclondon.com/posts/hyperdub-archive-eski-beat-an-interview-with-wiley-part-1-october-2003 once more
1.1.28. Wiley - Ground Zero (2001)
good riddim, quirked up string sfx, not too much to say
according to that interview (https://www.fabriclondon.com/posts/hyperdub-archive-eski-beat-an-interview-with-wiley-part-1-october-2003) this is both about 9/11 and the end of a relationship which is unreasonably funny to me somehow
1.1.29. Tempa T - Next Hype (2009)
reignited a new grime wave, probably peak temps and an all time classic. great track to work yourself
into rage, too
1.1.30. Spooky Bizzle - Spartan (~2009)
fire 8 bar beat. love the super fucked up square and the energy
1.1.30.2. Kozzie ft Marger, Merky Ace, Rival, Ego, Scrufizzer - Spartan Remix (2011)
link
fire, utilizes the flow of the beat super well, proper battle vibes
1.1.31. Soloman - Bokeh (2015)
1.1.32. So Solid Crew - Dilemma (2000)
Jammer - Feedback (2003)
<- Wiley - Eskimo 3 (2002)
link
another sustain bass tune and kind of pre-grime but fire. the occassional samples and fx do so much
1.1.33. Unknown Artist - 8-bar Special II (2002)
link
silly mashup tune
1.1.34. Pay as U Go Cartel - Know We (2000)
link
prod. Wiley, feat. Wiley, Major Ace, Maxwell D, God’s Gift.
still a garage tune but definitely one of the more important steps towards grime
1.1.35. Kahn - Fierce (2011)
link
heavy hitter with lots of distorted kick drums and typical kahn chiptune thingies
1.1.36. Blay Vision - Cammy Riddim (2023)
link
trap-ish modern grime beat that sparked a little freestyle wave, see https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3HAEVgGJAgpYHuF8mAnf89AMuJ2mXpBn
1.1.36.1. Cammy Riddim Devil Mix (2023)
link
dont really think this has any reason to exist tbh
1.1.36.2. Cammy Riddim (P Money Freestyle) (2023)
link
one of the coldest ones for sure, not going super hard but that kind of adds to the feel imo
1.1.36.3. Cammy Riddim (Sox Freestyle) (2023)
link
annoying ass effects but he does his thing super well, havent seen anyone else do spanish and arabic verses in the middle of a tune that shit crazy
1.1.37. Killjoy - Let’s Go (2022)
1.1.38. SLK - Pull Up Dat (2004?)
1.1.39. Skepta - Duppy/Doing It Again (2006)
1.1.40. Meridian Dan, Flowdan - London in the Rain (2019)
link
both of them are absolutely cold on this for sure
1.1.41. Enigma Dubz ft. Snowy - Lost It (2023)
link
catchy tune, lots of great dubstep and couple bars on the entire ep
1.1.42. SLK - North Weezy (2005)
link
prod. dj mondie, super catchy hook the rest is alright too i guess
1.1.43. DJ Mondie feat. Flirta D - R U Dumb (2005)
link
fuuucked up tune theres at least 3 vocal layers on this
1.1.44. Ruff Sqwad & Roll Deep - Sidewinder (2005)
1.1.45. Geeneus - Thunder (2002)
link
cowbell type tune with a goofy melody but has something to it
1.1.46. DJ Mondie - Straight (2004)
link
made by the SLK DJ it mostly feels like another Pulse X style tune but its alright. theres lots of dubs of this (see discogs i guess) but most of them are kinda mid
1.1.46.1. DJ Mondie - Straight (God’s Gift dub)
link
def one of the better ones, raw af
1.1.47. Lethal Bizzle - Pow (Forward!) (2004)
link
prod. Dexplicit feat. D Double E, Demon, Flowdan, Forcer, Fumin, Jamaka B, Napper, Neeko, Ozzie B.
the definite 8-bar rave tune, unbelievable energy. some clubs banned it due to fights occurring and so on, they also cut an entire verse which was basically Hotshot listing gun types and screaming “shoot it” into the mic a dozen times which radio stations didnt really like for some reason (see link
)
it also lead to the amazing headline David Cameron is a donut which was an opinion piece by Lethal Bizzle about
tories etc demonizing grime
1.1.47.1. Lethal Bizzle - Forward Riddim 2
1.1.48. Dizzee Rascal - Sittin Here (2002)
link
great introspective tune, one of my newfound favorites on Boy in the Corner. gives me some kind of anxiety i did
not really know i could feel.
1.1.48.1. Fekky & Dizzee Rascal - Still Sittin Here (2014)
link
prod. Splurgeboys. annoying hook and i dont like the drilly bits but dizzee absolutely murders this jesus
1.1.48.1.1. Fekky - Still Sittin Here Remix (2014)
link
feat. Tempa T, Skepta, Jammer, D Double E, JME, Chip, Frisco, Tinchy Stryder, Kano, Meridian Dan.
the sirens are super annoying but theres a lot of great verses on this, 5:03 in particular is insane
also why is there a DFB-Elf cap in this video whats up with that
1.1.49. P Money x Silencer - Stuttering (2021)
link
feat. Chip, D Double E, Dizzee Rascal. good track from beginning to end but dizzee man how does he do it
1.1.50. Curzed & Kromestar - Signs (2011)
link
suuper hard early riddim track
1.1.50.1. Skinzmann & Devilman over Signs on Big City Radio
1.2. Radio
1.2.1. Rinse.fm
still around on https://rinse.fm/! established as a jungle pirate radio by Slimzee around 95 and helped push garage, grime and dubstep
1.2.1.1. Wiley + Flowdan set (2001)
link
kind of low quality and not the very best mc work of those two but some crazy garage and 2-step tunes in particular
1.2.1.2. Oblig with Big Zuu, Manga Saint Hilare, Flirta D, Sox, Jafro & More (2024)
- crazy Shallow Grave around 8:20
- Juggernaut around 13:00 pops off too
1.2.1.3. Danny Weed, Dizzee Rascal, God’s Gift, Wiley (sep 18 2001)

instrumental

aka wiley kat aka eskiboy
the godfather of grime and also the absolute idiot of grime.
got started in the late 90s with garage and dnb on Rinse.fm as far as i know, found his first success with Pay as U Go Cartel, then founded Roll Deep and has been more or less
the most well-known member since Dizzee Rascal left.
helped a lot of people (Dizzee Rascal and Skepta) for example blow up and just seemed to have been
an overall very supportive force in grime.
also got the whole Eskibeat ordeal started (eskiboy is a nickname he often uses in his songs i guess,
there’s a lot of weird themes built around the arctic and ice in his music) and has been one of the most
innovative producers and talented mcs in the game.
however there’s also a long history of erratic behavior that made him hard to work with, a fairly
recent and disgusting arc of him being absurdly antisemitic, and assault and burglary
acts a couple years ago so maybe dont pay this guy money i think
honestly he seems mentally very much unwell in ways people dont really acknowledge online but that
doesnt excuse all the horrible shit of course, its kind of similar to the kanye situation though not
quite that bad yet

probably one of the most underrated MCs in grime. absolutely wild what this man can do in a single take,
from ad libs to the backwards flow to the characteristic f to the l i thing and so on. not the best
lyrically but definitely one of the most creative and technically impressive MCs

been in the game since 1994 (according to this sets description at least), started off with jungle,
later moved on to garage, at some point he joined Nasty Crew and became probably the most famous mc
of the crew.
often described as your favorite’s mc favorite’s mc and so on, a lot of grime artists and fans consider him one of, if not the goat. has a lot of characteristic bars and ad libs as well as pretty much absurd
crowd control that lead to him becoming what i think is the mc with the highest reload density.
afaik he got somewhat big on the first international Dizzee Rascal tour (or at least any of the earlier ones), which he participated in under the condition he could bring Footsie and Monkstar which pretty much lead to the Newham Generals establishing.
moved on to a focus on his solo career and songwriting around 2015 but hes mostly doing drill now and
its all just not very good as much as i would like it to be
also had an ad campaign with ikea??? see D Double E - Fresh n Clean (2019)
was originally just called Dee or D or something but the radio station he mced on had another MC D join
at some point so he had to distinguish himself i guess

1.5. Albums etc.
1.5.1. Ruff Sqwad - White Label Classics
link
Lots of classic instrumentals, imo chill and almost melancholic vibes compared to the cold eskibeat sounds
for example, but there’s lots of overlap too with tunes like Ruff Sqwad - Pied Piper.
Also included:
1.5.2. Dizzee Rascal - Boy in the Corner (2003)
Dizzee Rascal - Sittin Here (2002)
The definite grime album and the international breakthrough for both Dizzee and the genre. Lots of very weird (/pos) beats on here and overall a leftfield and kind of cold atmosphere most grime never was able
to offer, not even Wiley’s Eskibeat stuff (though of course that very much influenced the album)
1.5.3. Flowdan - Disaster Piece (2016)
great album, lots of amazing grime and dubstep riddims and just a super consistent performance
included:
1.5.4. Plastician - Beg to Differ (2007)
feat. Skepta, Chronik, Frisco, Esco, Tempa T.
the best plastician work imo, it’s more dubstep than it is grime but either way just amazing
atmosphere and constantly on the edge between the warmth of the melancholic melody bits
and the cold bass and grime beats
intensive snare has some of the worst bars ive ever heard from Skepta though that shits just way too
goofy for that track
includes:
1.5.5. Manga Saint Hilare prod. MoreNight - Everything is under Control (2024)
pretty great! not necessarily a grime album, it’s very much mixed with softer garage and even rnb-ish tunes. good vibes though

1.7. Styles
1.7.1. TODO 8-bar
Musical Mob - Pulse X (January 2002)
Early 2000s style from the transitionary period between garage and grime.
Named after its A/B structure with each part 8 bars long which lended itself very well to fast-paced MCing in larger crews with 8 or 16-bar verses for each member.
